A motorcycle accident in Courtenay resulted in the death of the motorcycle driver and minor injuries to a transit bus passenger.
UPDATE: Comox Valley RCMP says the man that died after his motorcycle crashed into a transit bus Tuesday afternoon in Courtenay was in his 60s and from Comox.
The incident happened around 4:15 p.m. at the intersection of Ryan Road and Cowichan Avenue near North Island College.
Police say the driver of the bus is uninjured, but a passenger had to be taken by ambulance to hospital for minor injuries.
Investigators have determined the motorcycle was going west on Ryan Road in the right turn only lane.
Police say he then unexpectedly changed lanes to continue heading west and hit the broadside of the bus that was making a left turn into the college.
An air ambulance was called to take the man to Victoria, but he was pronounced deceased at Comox Valley Hospital.
The intersection was closed for several hours while the scene was examined.
RCMP say the bus driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
“The nice weather has finally arrived in the Comox Valley and we are urging all motorists to be patient and mindful of additional traffic on our roads,” Comox Valley RCMP Cpl. Brad Matchett said.
Police say the investigation is still in the preliminary stages.
ORIGINAL STORY: Police were on the scene for several hours investigating the crash between a motorcycle and a transit bus.
“A motorcycle was travelling in a southbound direction on Ryan Road,” said Sargent Brian Nightingale of the Comox Valley RCMP. “He was passing everybody in the right turn lane and then at the very end of the right turn lane he tried to make a lane change into the through lane and as a result there was a bus turning left and he ended up hitting the bus that was making the left turn in front of him.”
The victim was taken to the nearby Comox Valley Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
It is unclear if any passengers were on the bus at the time. The driver was not injured.
Ryan Road between Back Road and Lerwick Road was closed for over three hours as police investigated.
