Fire crews were able to deploy hand lines to the area and knock the fire down quickly before it spread to surrounding bushes and trees.

Langford Fire responded to reports of a large plume of dark smoke coming from a wooded area near Savory Road in Langford just before 9 a.m. Wednesday.

When they arrived they found an older mobile home fully engulfed in flames.

Acting Assistant Chief Simon Chadwick said fire crews were able to deploy hand lines to the area and knock the fire down quickly before it spread to surrounding bushes and trees.

“The main concern we had was obviously as you can see the roof has collapsed so we wanted to make sure there was nobody inside,” he said.

After inspecting the structure, which was destroyed by the flames, Chadwick said it didn’t appear anybody was inside.

It’s unclear if anyone was living in the mobile home which has sat in the remote wooded area for years.

“This has obviously been here a long time, we’ve had quite a few homeless fires recently so it’s something we’ve become more aware of. The problem with this is obviously stretching lines in, getting water to these fires — but the crew were on it really quick [and] did a great job today,” Chadwick said.

Three units responded to the blaze and Langford Fire called in mutual aid to assist. There’s no word yet on what caused the fire or if it’s being considered suspicious.
