Missing Nanaimo woman Elizabeth Gilchrist, 82, is shown in a submitted photo.

The search for a senior who went missing from her Nanaimo home on Tuesday has ended tragically after she was found dead, according to RCMP.

Elizabeth Gilchrist, 82, wandered from her Stephenson Point-area home sometime overnight Tuesday, police said in an earlier news release.

A family member who came to her home just before 11 a.m. Tuesday discovered the front door was open and she was missing.

Gilchrist was suffering from “significant” medical issues at the time, sparking more concern over her whereabouts.

On Wednesday, police confirmed Gilchrist had been located deceased and declined to provide any other details out of respect for her family, later adding no criminality is suspected in the death.

“The RCMP offers its condolences to the family of the woman and would like to thank the public and the media for their assistance,” said BC RCMP spokesman Cpl. Alex Berube.
