Emergency Crews were able to extinguish a “hazardous” workshop fire on a residential property in Metchosin late Friday night.

The Metchosin Fire Department was called to the 4100-block of Metchosin Road just after 11 p.m. after the owner noticed the fire.

First responders faced flames that reached 20-30 feet in the air, as combustibles were stored in the detached structure.

“[It was] a hazardous situation, lots of combustibles like gas cylinders, paint products, lots of regular stuff you find in a shed.” said Metchosin fire Lt. Scott Henning.

The structure was completely destroyed by the fire but there were no injuries. Metchosin fire says the initial knockdown was quick but the cleanup was finished at 4 a.m.

Henning says the fire is a good reminder to the public to keep hazardous and extremely combustible items in proper storage,

“Make sure your flammables and explosives are contained,” said Henning.  “In flammable storage, It would help contain it.”

An investigation into the incident will begin Saturday afternoon. The suspected cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
