A man with a metal pole is facing multiple charges after allegedly assaulting three Victoria police officers on BC Day.

According to the Victoria Police Department, multiple officers were called to the Quadra Street and Hillside Avenue intersection just before 3 p.m. Aug. 3, following reports about a man using a metal pole to break a nearby bus stop window.

After arriving on the scene, officers attempted to arrest the man but he resisted and started fighting with them, the department said. Officers pepper-sprayed the suspect in an attempt to detain him, but it was ineffective and ended up Tasering the man.

Const. Cam MacIntyre of the Victoria Police Department told CHEK the man was unarmed when he assaulted officers.

VicPD said three officers suffered non-life-threatening injuries during the fight while the suspect suffered also had non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital for assessment.

Wesley Joel Switzer, born in 1986, has been charged with assaulting a peace officer, resisting arrest and mischief under $5,000, according to information available on BC Court Services.

Switzer is scheduled to appear in a Victoria provincial courtroom today.
