A 72-year-old man in Nanaimo suffered a medical incident while driving, which led to a six-vehicle collision, according to Nanaimo RCMP.
The driver passed away as a result of his medical incident, and his wife who was in the vehicle with him has been brought to the hospital in a neck brace.
Paramedics attempted to revive the man but were unsuccessful.
RCMP say the occupants of the five other vehicles did not have serious injuries.
The collision was on the Trans-Canada Highway at the Tenth Street intersection. RCMP say the call came in shortly before noon.
The Trans-Canada Highway between Haliburton and Tenth streets is closed southbound with a single lane open northbound, while a BC Coroner attends the scene. Police suspect the highway will reopen in the next hour or two. Drivers are asked to avoid the area.
There’s been a serious motor vehicle crash involving at lease three vehicles in #Nanaimo at 10th street and Island Hwy South. There are injuries. You likely want to avoid the area though traffic is getting through single lane north and south bound @CHEK_News pic.twitter.com/bklC5MWc4G
