Comox Valley recreation facilities will remain open with the appointment of a mediator in contract talks between unionized staff and the district.

The Comox Valley Regional District says negotiations on a new collective agreement with recreation facilities unionized staff began in January as the current agreement expired in February.

The district says a number of issues have been resolved, but a new pact has not been reached, with wages among the issues that remain unsettled.

On Sunday, United Steelworkers Union Local 1-1937 completed a strike vote, which gave workers a chance to give 72 hours notice to strike.

In a release Friday, the district says the appointment of a mediator means no strike action will happen while the two sides remain at the negotiating table.

There are 81 USW employees at the Comox Valley Sports and Aquatics Centres, and both will stay open and programs will continue through contract talks.
