A special flag-raising ceremony took place at the B.C. Legislature on Sunday.

The Mauritian flag was hoisted to mark that country’s independence 50 years ago today.

The colourful flag was raised at the flagpole in front of the B.C. legislature at noon.

Some travelled from the mainland to take part in this historic moment, marking the Golden Jubilee of Mauritian Independence day.

“We feel so proud,” says Sousheela Ramsami, president of the Mauritian-Canadian Multicultural Association of B.C.. “It?s an emotional event to see our flag floating in BC. It has lots of emotion, lots of patriotism going on, it makes us feel, yeah we are home too as well here.”

It’s the first time British Columbians of Mauritian descent are celebrating their home country’s independence at the legislature.

“Canada is a melting pot of so many cultures, it is so welcoming,” says Liberal MLA John Rustad. “It?s great to see us to be able to celebrate this here on the lawn of the legislature.”
