A Nanaimo man says one of three fishing rods thieves took off with last week “holds countless childhood memories”.

Nanaimo RCMP is investigating after the rods were stolen from Roger Hannigan’s pickup truck parked in his Girvis Street driveway March 7.

One of those rods was given to Hannigan by his father, shortly before his father died.

Hannigan told police the other two rods are replaceable, but not the one from his dad that is referred to as an “Ugly Stik”.

“Maybe the thieves will have a change of heart,” Hannigan told police and RCMP release Friday morning.

“I’m not holding out hope but it sure would be nice to have it back.”

The rod passed on from Hannigan’s father has lettering on the handle which says “Ugly Stik”, while another one was a Redington Path 11 Outfit fishing rod with a Crosswater reel.

Also taken was a pair of green neoprene hip waders.

If anyone has information on the stolen items, you are asked to call Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345, or Crime Stoppers.
