Saanich Police are investigating after a man was found trapped under a van in the 4000-block of Douglas Street.

Police officers were called to a parking lot near The Salvation Army Victoria Citadel just before noon Sunday to find the man partially stuck, according to Sgt. Damian Kowalewich.

He says Saanich fire crews also attended the scene and removed the man from underneath the van before paramedics transported him to hospital.

“Right now, we don’t know the state of his health condition. Our first priority was to get him medical assistance,” Kowalewich told CHEK News Sunday afternoon.

As investigators examined the scene, Douglas Street at Blackberry Road was closed to traffic in both directions, but it has since reopened. Video footage captured by CHEK News shows a section of the parking lot lined with police tape.

Kowalewich says it’s too early to determine how the man became trapped.

“At this point, it appears that there was no driver. We’re trying to figure out what exactly happened on scene there,” he added. “We know that there was only one vehicle involved, and the man is associated with the van itself.”
