Police in Oak Bay are looking for a man who reportedly smashed his way into a parked car and stole nearly $5,000 in cash.

Police say the theft occurred along Oak Bay’s main street in the 2100-block of Oak Bay Avenue on Oct. 10.

A witness called police after they spotted a man smashing the front passenger window of an unoccupied car.

Investigators later learned that the driver of the vehicle, a Hyundai Sonata, was only renting the car and had left the money on the front passenger seat as he popped into a nearby business.

The suspect in the theft is described as having light skin, and was wearing a “Tilley”-style brimmed hat, camo cargo pants and was carrying a hiking backpack at the time.

Police say there was no surveillance video of the area, and despite a wide search, officers were not able to locate the man at the time.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Oak Bay police.
