A man who witnesses saw lying in the middle of a Courtenay Road was fatally struck by a driver early Wednesday, according to RCMP.

Comox Valley RCMP was called to the incident in the 3900-block of Ryan Road in Courtenay at around 1 a.m.

Witnesses told responding officers that a man was lying in the middle of the road and was narrowly missed by a vehicle driving by.

The driver of that vehicle pulled over and turned on their hazard lights to warn other drivers, but one driver did not see the man and struck him, RCMP said.

“At this time, we do not know what the man was doing in the middle of the road,” said Comox Valley RCMP spokesperson Const. Monika Terragni.

“We will continue our investigation and will work with the BC Coroners Service to determine all the factors leading up to this man’s death; including whether or not he may have suffered an injury or medical incident prior to being struck by the vehicle.”

The driver of the vehicle that struck the man remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, RCMP said.

Anyone with information on the collision or who has dashcam footage is asked to call Comox Valley RCMP at 250-338-1321.
