One Vancouver Island man may have been trying to beat the high price of gas when he hit the Patricia Bay Highway on Saturday.

Ryan Gibson was one of the people who saw the unusual sight at around 9:15 a.m. on May 4 and took some pictures.

Sidney/North Saanich RCMP said the man was seen driving on the shoulder northbound before exiting at Wain Road.

Gibson contacted police and several officers looked around the area but did not find the man.

Police said they while they appreciated the man staying on the shoulder, riding a lawnmower on the highway is illegal.
