An investigation is underway after a man was shot and killed by police in Nanaimo.

On Saturday at around 2 p.m., multiple RCMP officers responded to the 800-block of Haliburton Street, near Highview Terrace, following reports that a man and woman were fighting beside a vehicle that was parked on the street.

Once officers arrived on the scene, the man produced a weapon, according to the Nanaimo RCMP.

“Shots were fired by police and the man was injured. BC Emergency Health Services attended, however, despite all efforts, the man died at the scene,” the Nanaimo RCMP said in a release issued Sunday.

There were no other injuries as a result of the incident.

The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia is now investigating the incident. The area has been closed for an undetermined amount of time as the investigation remains ongoing.

Mounties say the man and woman were known to each other.
