Police in Victoria say a man is in custody after at least one gunshot was allegedly fired through an apartment in the city’s Fernwood neighbourhood early this morning.

According to VicPD, at around 6 a.m., officers responded to an apartment in the 1200-block of Yates Street, near the Victoria Fire Station, after receiving reports about shots fired in the area.

The report indicated that at least one gunshot had been fired through the wall of an apartment suite, which was home to a young family that was sleeping at the time.

VicPD say responding officers elected to evacuate nearby residents for safety reasons and called in the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team (GVERT) as well as crisis negotiators, who made contact with the suspect in the suite where the gunshot was allegedly fired from.

GVERT officers ended up forcing the man’s door open after he was uncooperative. Once inside the man surrendered without incident, according to VicPD.

“There was a hole in the wall above the suspect’s bed. So, it’s very clear to us that this was a gunshot that went through the wall into that occupied suite,” VicPD said in a brief media press conference that was held on Yates Street.

There were no injuries and police say they don’t believe the family was targeted and won’t disclose the type of weapon used. The man is currently in custody and an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
