The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. is investigating after a man was seriously injured in a fall at least two storeys up from a parking lot at Uptown on Saturday.

According to a release, police responded around 11 p.m. on Nov. 26 to a report of a shoplifter at Walmart.

Police say the suspect ran to an upper parking lot and fell from a ledge outside a guardrail, falling two or three storeys, and suffered serious injuries.

The release does not say what caused the man to fall or where police were at the time he fell.

The man was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

“The IIO has begun an investigation to determine what role, if any, police actions or inactions played in the man’s fall,” the release says. “The IIO asks anyone with relevant information about this incident to contact the witness line toll free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form at iiobc.ca.”

An earlier version of this story said the man fell as Saanich Police pursued him. A Saanich Police spokesperson said there was no pursuit and the story has been updated to reflect that.
