Mounties say a man died of a medical emergency while driving on the Trans-Canada Highway in View Royal on Tuesday morning.

The single-vehicle crash occurred around 10:18 a.m. on the highway near Helmcken Road.

West Shore RCMP says it was called to the intersection for a report of a vehicle driving off the road and stopping against a median.

When officers arrived at the scene, they saw a flatbed tow truck against the side of the highway.

First responders determined the driver, a 49-year-old man, had suffered a medical emergency and paramedics attempted life-saving measures. However, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say they do not suspect any foul play in the man’s death, and the BC Coroner’s Service has been notified.

“West Shore RCMP extends their condolences to the driver’s family and friends,” said the West Shore RCMP in a statement Wednesday.
