On Jan. 22, police responded to Port Place Mall for reports a man had been stabbed.

Nanaimo RCMP say a man has been charged with second-degree murder related to the death of a man at Port Place Mall last month.

Around 7 p.m. on Jan. 22, police were called to the mall for a report of a man with an apparent stab wound who later died from the injuries.

On Feb. 3, the B.C. Prosecution Service approved a second-degree murder charge against Sean Patterson for the death of Serguei Chiliakhov outside of Port Place Mall in Nanaimo.

Patterson is currently in custody and scheduled to appear before the court on Feb. 16.

“Given that this matter is now before the courts, police will not be providing any additional information with regards to the investigation,” said Const. Tanaska Armstrong of the Nanaimo RCMP.

On Jan. 22, after the stabbing, the victim had made his way into the shopping mall and collapsed outside the walk-in clinic, but the clinic had already closed at 6 p.m.

Bystanders tried to provide first aid to the victim and paramedics took over to provide medical care once they arrived.

Born-and-raised Nanaimo resident Chris Thompson says he sometimes feels unsafe using the bank machine.

“It’s upsetting because it was such a peaceful town, something’s got to be done. I don’t know what,” Thompson said.

It was Nanaimo’s first homicide of the year just 22 days into the new year.
