A man has been charged with manslaughter in the shooting death of a 16-year-old on Salt Spring Island last year.

Alistair Hayne, 16, died on Sept. 24, 2017, after he was shot at a party on Salt Spring Island. When police responded to the shooting in the early hours of Sept. 24, they had found six youths, including Hayne, at the home. Hayne was suffering from a gunshot wound.

He was taken to hospital where he died the same day.

The Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIIMCU) were called to investigate the incident. The VIIMCU announced Wednesday that one man has been charged with one count of manslaughter. He cannot be identified because he was a youth at the time of the offence.

The man appeared in court Wednesday and police said they will not be releasing any more information about the case as it is before the courts.

We understand that this investigation has greatly impacted all involved. These events always have a profound impact on families and communities,Insp. Dave Hall, officer in charge of VIIMCU said in a statement. Our thoughts are with them, as we work to prepare for future court proceedings.
