A 37-year-old man was arrested Sunday night by Nanaimo RCMP for uttering death threats while reportedly armed with a machete.

Ryan Andrew Ordway was taken into custody after police responded to a home on Wakesiah Avenue around 8:30 p.m.

A 34-year-old man and 23-year-old woman met police outside the house and believed the suspect was inside.

Although officers did not find the suspect after evacuating the two suites in the home and conducting a search, they returned at 11:30 p.m. when the suspect came back.

Ordway was arrested without incident and the machete was not located.

A small amount of suspected cocaine and heroin was found in Ordway’s possession.

After appearing in Provincial court in Nanaimo Monday, Ordway was formally charged with assault, three counts of uttering threats and two counts of possession of a controlled substance.

He remains in custody to await his next court appearance on December 5.
