A man who was caught drinking in public in downtown Nanaimo was arrested after police say he was wanted on several outstanding warrants.

According to a Nanaimo RCMP press release, officers with a bike patrol unit noticed a man consuming alcohol in public in the city’s downtown area on Aug. 25 and asked him to identify himself.

Police say the man produced a false name, which led officers to search his belongings, where his real identification was found.

Mounties say the individual turned out to be a 34-year-old man currently wanted on seven outstanding warrants issued in the Vancouver area for offences which include assaulting a police officer, assault with a weapon, assault and uttering threats.

“This is one more criminal who has been removed from our community simply due to the efforts of good old-fashioned proactive police patrols,” Const. Gary O’Brien, media spokesperson for the Nanaimo RCMP.

The 34-year-old man is currently in police custody awaiting transport back to Vancouver.
