Man arrested after throwing rocks at building, attempting to steal car with woman inside

A man was arrested in Victoria after he allegedly attempted to carjack someone, threw rocks at a government building and challenged police officers to a physical fight.

The incident happened shortly after 2 p.m. Wednesday near downtown Victoria.

Officers with the Victoria Police Department were called to the 900-block of Pandora Avenue after a man reportedly threw rocks at multiple windows on a government building, according to a press release.

Victoria Police say that as officers were heading to the scene, they received reports that the man had attempted to steal a vehicle occupied by a woman who was parked near Quadra and Mason streets.

“The man reached into the vehicle through an open window and attempted to take the keys from the woman. The woman was able to retain the keys and drive away from the scene, while the man kicked at her car,” Victoria Police said in the press release.

Fortunately, the woman was physically unharmed during the incident.

Then, Victoria Police say, the man returned to the same government building in the 900-block of Pandora Avenue and began throwing rocks at the windows just as officers arrived.

When confronted by officers, the man allegedly challenged officers to a fight, which led to an officer deploying a conductive energy weapon and taking him into custody.

Once in custody, Victoria Police say the man made a number of concerning statements to officers and was subsequently apprehended under the Mental Health Act and transported to hospital for a mental health assessment.

The man is now facing recommended charges of attempted robbery and mischief, say police.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Victoria Police Department at 250-995-7654, extension 1 or Greater Victoria Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.
