A man was arrested for spitting on a woman who was pushing a stroller in downtown Victoria earlier this week.

A Victoria Police patrol officer reportedly saw the man spit on a woman’s face as she was pushing a baby stroller in the downtown area around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The officer then arrested the man at the scene after the victim confirmed that he had spat on her as they were walking in opposite directions.

However, police say the victim left before the officer could speak with her further.

On Thursday morning, VicPD said they were hoping to speak with the victim.

By early Thursday evening, police said the victim had come forward and spoken with investigators.

Meanwhile, the man has been charged with assault, according to VicPD. Police add that they believe the incident was random.

“This suspect was arrested because of the quick actions of an officer doing routine patrols downtown,” said VicPD spokesperson Const. Terri Healy.

“We will continue to do proactive police work in the downtown core and beyond to ensure people can feel safe in their community,” she said. “We also thank the victim for coming forward and assisting with our investigation.”
