Man arrested after pointing firearm at passerby in Nanaimo

The Nanaimo RCMP has arrested a man after he reportedly pointed a black firearm at a passerby on the street as the man drove by his location.

The incident was reported to have taken place at approximately 2 a.m. on Septemeber 4 in the 2800-block of Departure Bay Road in Nanaimo.

According to police, the witness drove to safety away from the man with the firearm before calling 911.

With a detailed description from the witness, the police were able to quickly locate and arrest the suspect.

Police Dog Services (PDS) were called and a search of the area where they located the suspect led officers to discover a black Smith & Wesson 9mm handgun.

The 26-year-old suspect, Scott Rogers, was later held in custody to appear in Nanaimo Provincial Court the following day.

Rogers of Nanaimo was charged with Pointing a Firearm, Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purpose and Possession of a Firearm without a License.

“They did everything the police hope witnesses will do. They left a potentially dangerous situation; they immediately called 911 and provided information that led to the arrest of the suspect,” said Cst Sherri Wade with Nanaimo RCMP.

Rogers was remanded into custody to await his next court appearance which has been set for September 28, 2021, in Nanaimo Provincial Court.
