Campbell River RCMP say two men were arrested Monday after officers seized knives, nunchucks and an airsoft rifle that looked like an assault rifle.

At around 2 p.m. on Monday, Campbell River RCMP received a call that said a man walking down Island Highway had an assault rifle under his arm. Police immediately responded and arrested two men near the Campbell River Walmart at 1477 Island Highway.

Officers confirmed the assault rifle that had been reported was an airsoft rifle. It was seized along with drugs, nunchucks and knives.

According to Campbell River RCMP, the two men, aged 25 and 48, have been charged with possession of a weapon dangerous to the public and possession of a prohibited weapon. Their first court appearance is Aug. 27. Police have not released their names at this time.

“There is no way of knowing a firearm is real or fake without close hands-on inspection.” Cpl. Ron Vlooswyk of the Campbell River RCMP said in a release. “They are all treated as real by the responding officers and they are treated as real by the courts. This was a dangerous situation that could have turned out very badly if it hadn’t been for the coordinated member response with the caller who relayed good accurate information.”
