RCMP say a man was arrested on an outstanding warrant after barricading himself inside of a residence, drawing a large police presence, on Thursday afternoon.
Around 2:30 p.m., multiple Greater Victoria residents told CHEK News they saw police vehicles rushing on the Patricia Bay Highway towards Sidney.
Const. Tim Cosgrove with Sidney/North Saanich RCMP says the large police presence was because the person being arrested was deemed to be a risk to police members.
Police arrested one man in the 9600-block of Third Street on outstanding warrants. The man had barricaded himself inside of a residence, and the Vancouver Island Emergency Response Team was called out to assist.
Mounties told CHEK News there was no risk to the general public.
“Sidney/North Saanich RCMP along with the RCMP ERT are currently conducting a police operation in Sidney,” said Cpl. Alex Bérubé in an email to CHEK News just after 2:45 p.m. Thursday.
“For operational reasons, I can’t share further details however the operation is contained and there are no perceived risk to the public at this time,” he said.
At approximately 3:15 p.m., RCMP said one person was arrested and that the incident was considered resolved.
RCMP says no further details will be released as the investigation is ongoing.
