The former mayor of Kelowna was charged with a single count of sexual assault, the BC Prosecution Service announced Dec. 7, 2022.

The BC Prosecution Service says a special prosecutor has approved a single charge of sexual assault against former Kelowna Mayor Colin Basran.

The service says the sexual assault is alleged to have occurred on May 22, while Basran was still in office. He ran for the position again in the recent civic elections held Oct. 15, but was defeated.

Brock Marland was appointed as special prosecutor on Oct. 13 to avoid any potential for real or perceived improper influence in the administration of justice due to the suspect.

BCPS said the announcement of the appointment was initially postponed pending completion of the investigation, but is being made public now that a charge against Basran has been approved.

Details of the alleged sexual assault have not been made public, and the charge has yet to be proven or tested in court.

Basran’s first court appearance is set for Jan. 24.
