It’s a sport that has given birth to many Formula One stars, and now it is quickly gaining momentum on Vancouver Island.
Karting involves specially built go karts that can reach speeds in excess of 130 kilometres an hour.
The Vancouver Island Karting Association runs events at the Vancouver Island Motorsports Circuit outside of Duncan, with drivers of all ages taking part in the action.
“I think we have racers from seven to close to 80, like we have some 70-year-old’s on track, 75-year-old’s,” says club president Bram Harvey.
“Our member numbers have increased in the last three to four years by ten fold, I think we had 30 members four years ago and we’re close to 200 members today.”
One of the younger competitors is nine-year-old James Bedard. Last year the mainland based racer placed 20th in the world at the Rotax Grand Finals in Portugal. The thrill of being on track has the youngster hooked.
“[I] just enjoy the feeling of being out on the track, feeling the adrenaline in my body,” says James.
For Quinn Pearson and his daughter Charlotte, the sport is also a chance to spend family time together at the track.
“It’s so much fun doing this with Charlotte and keeping it family oriented,” says Quinn.
“We get to go on track and race together, well practice together, and it’s really fun being able to share that with my dad,” adds Charlotte.
As for who is faster?
“Dad’s slow, but she’s quick,” smiles Quinn.
