Jagmeet Singh announced today that the NDP would invest $30 million into BC Ferries if his party forms the next federal government.

The announcement was made from the deck of a ferry as the federal NDP leader wrapped up a multi-day visit to Vancouver Island with a trip across the channel from Victoria to Vancouver Saturday morning.

Singh said that the $30 million would “boost investments into the current existing agreement with BC and the ferries,” adding that the fund would help with increased service and lower costs.

“A one-way ride on the ferry from Victoria to the mainland, for a family is $90, for two people and a car,” Singh said. “For people on the island, the ferries aren’t just a ferry, they’re really like a highway. They’re how people connect with one another.”

Singh also took aim at Trudeau’s Liberal government for “neglecting” BC Ferries and singled out Minister of Transport Marc Garneau for criticism.

“Minister Garneau talked about it, and signalled that he might be interested in it, but never really followed through in four years,” said Singh.
