A couple from Sooke are celebrating the first day of 2020 with a newborn baby boy.

At 12:17 a.m. on Jan. 1, Heather and Mike of Sooke welcomed Reese Campbell Leier at the Victoria General Hospital, following four hours of labour.

“It wasn’t expected,” Heather said. “He was due on Boxing Day so we weren’t expecting him to come this late because he’s our second.”

Baby Reese weighed eight pounds, three ounces. He has an older brother: two-year-old Roman.

Heather said Mike got to pick their first son’s name so she decided on Reese for their second baby.

“It’s actually just been a name I’ve always really liked,” Heather said.

Reese is the New Year’s baby for Island Health. This means he’s the first baby born this year in the health authority.

“It’s kind of cool for him to get recognized,” Heather said about Reese’s birth.

According to the B.C. Ministry of Health, over 40,000 babies are expected to be born in B.C. in 2020. As of Dec. 18, 2019, 40,978 babies have been born in B.C. during 2019.

Last year, Olivia was the most popular baby name, followed by Oliver, Lucas, Liam, Ethan, Noah, William, Benjamin, Charlotte, Emma and Leo.
