The Village of Zeballos recently posted a notice on its website requesting anyone considering coming to the small community for non-essential purposes to abandon those plans.

As the coronavirus pandemic continues, a small community on Vancouver Island is asking people to stay away.

The Village of Zeballos recently posted a notice on its website requesting anyone considering coming to the small community for non-essential purposes to abandon those plans.

“We are a very small, remote community with limited medical resources and community services. Many businesses and local organizations have scaled down operations to just essential services, so we can all concentrate on our personal health and the safety of our community members,” reads a letter signed by Zeballos Mayor, Julie Colborne.

Current provincial COVID-19 restrictions, forbid people from travelling outside of their health authority region for non-essential purposes.

The Island Health region covers all of Vancouver Island, meaning the provincial order does not restrict people from elsewhere on the Island from travelling to Zeballos.

The Village of Zeballos says they support current provincial orders on non-essential travel and encourage people to explore outdoors in their own area until its safe to travel again.

“Everyone can still enjoy the outdoors, but for now, let’s do so in our own communities.”

Zeballos, which has a population of less than 110 people, is located roughly 2 hours and 45 minutes northwest of Campbell River.
