A social media campaign has been launched by Island Health encouraging people who have been the victim of a sexual assault to seek medical care.

Citing Statistics Canada data, Island Health says sexual assault is the most underreported violent crime in Canada.

The health authority is using the hashtag “Trust Yourself” in the campaign and urging people to see a forensic nurse examiner, emergency departments or through a primary health care provider if “something feels wrong or if they suspect they have been sexually assaulted.”

In a release, Island Health says many people do not report being victims for many reasons, including not wanting family to know, fear of getting in trouble themselves or they believe alcohol or drug impairment will diminish their credibility.

Medical officials say some have no recollection of an attack.

Island Health says the campaign is inclusive for male victims, with Stats Canada data showing 13 per cent of sexual assault reports come from men.

The health authority says #TrustYourself lets men know the same confidential medical services are available to them.

There are 60 forensic nurse examiners employed by Island Health who can provide medication and help connect survivors to counselling supports.

The campaign also takes aim at domestic violence trying to tackle sexual and physical violence crimes within relationships.
