Island Health’s outbreak response has identified one additional patient case related to the COVID-19 outbreak declared at Tofino General Hospital (TGH) on October 12.

According to a release from the health authority, this additional case is not the result of new or ongoing transmission at TGH.

As of Friday, a total of five patients have tested positive related to the COVID-19 outbreak.

While an outbreak is occurring at the facility, officials say that it is limited to the inpatient unit and the emergency department and the rest of the hospital remain open. The outbreak has had no impact on other hospital operations outside of the inpatient unit.

“Upon declaring the outbreak, Island Health immediately implemented precautions, including enhanced cleaning and contact tracing to protect the health of all patients, staff and medical staff. Communication with patients, families and staff is ongoing,” reads a statement from the health authority.

Island Health has implemented comprehensive strategies to prevent and respond to COVID-19 in long-term care, acute care, assisted living and licensed facilities.

Island Health is acknowledging that TGH remains open and if anyone requires emergency care, they should not hesitate to visit the emergency room immediately.
