A new COVID-19 testing and collection site has opened in downtown Victoria as active cases continue to climb on the South Island.

Testing at the new Victoria Conference Centre site on 720 Douglas Street is available by appointment only to people with cold, flu or COVID-like symptoms, Island Health announced in a news release Friday.

The testing site will be open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

People with symptoms are asked to use the self-assessment tool on the B.C. government’s website or call 1-844-901-8442 to determine if they require a test.

The site, inside the conference centre pavilion, is separate from an immunization clinic on the east side of the building on Douglas Street.

Island Health is opening the new testing site amid a rise in active cases on the South Island.

On Thursday, there were 567 reported active cases in Island Health overall, 330 of which were recorded on the South Island — up from just 157 cases on Sept. 7.
