There is a new place on Vancouver Island to get tested for COVID-19.

Island Health announced on Tuesday that they have opened a brand new drive-thru COVID-19 testing site – also called a collection centre – at the Vancouver Island University campus.

Those with cold, flu or COVID-19-like symptoms must book an appointment to get tested at the collection centre, which will be open from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. daily.

The new location replaces a COVID-19 testing centre that had been located at Grant Avenue in Nanaimo.

Island Health says the VIU location will have double the testing capacity compared to the Grant Avenue location and that staff will be able to work in heated kiosks.

Despite increased testing capacity in recent months, British Columbia continues to have one of the lowest COVID-19 testing rates in Canada.
