Island Health finds home support so Campbell River woman can live at home

McKayla Dunsmore, 29, has lived at the Campbell River hospital for six weeks while Island Health tried to find extra nursing supports for her to live in her group home.

A day after CHEK News shared the story of McKayla Dunsmore living in the Campbell River hospital due to a lack of home care support, her mother shares the supports have been found.

McKayla, 29, lived at home with the support of her parents until she was 22, at which point she was moved to a group care home for extra help.

She has cerebral palsy and her mom, Candie Dunsmore, says she has complex needs.

Late last year, her condition deteriorated and the care home was no longer able to care for her.

“The group home is only licensed to do so much with being caregivers, and we had a community health nurse that was connected to her, but things have started to change with her, and the out-of-the-house nurses weren’t able to keep up with all the changes that were happening with her,” Candie told CHEK News on Tuesday.

For the past six weeks, McKayla has been living in the Campbell River hospital while Island Health tried to find a solution.

Then on Wednesday, Candie tells CHEK News that Island Health contacted her and shared they have found the extra nursing supports, and McKayla will be able to move back into her care home some time next week.
