Island Health extends overdose advisory for Victoria

Island Health is extending and overdose advisory for Victoria first issued more than a week ago.

“There has been an increase in overdoses over the past two weeks and the alert has been extended,” the notice reads.

Compared to the average number of overdoses in the last three months,  August has seen a troubling trend.

“We are noticing more than double the amount of overdoses,” said Dr. Dee Hoyano, medical health officer with Vancouver Island Health told CHEK on August 8th.

“There are no safe drugs on the streets at the moment,” said Grant McKenzie with Our Place Society.

Victoria had seen 23 fatal drug overdoses in the first five months of 2019 after recording 99 in 2018, according to statistics from the BC Coroner’s Office.
