Island Health declares five new COVID-19 outbreaks

Island Health, in a press release issued Saturday, has declared five new COVID-19 outbreaks at healthcare facilities in Victoria and Saanich.

The facilities are James Bay Care Centre, Luther Court, Selkirk Seniors Village, The Heights and Mt. View and Royal Jubilee Hospital.

The health authority says they have implemented comprehensive strategies to prevent and respond to COVID-19 in long-term care, acute care, assisted living and licensed care facilities and will be supporting all of the declared sites.

Island Health has also declared outbreaks over at Amica Douglas House long-term care home on Douglas Street in Victoria, Eden Gardens long-term care home in Nanaimo and Kiwanis Village Lodge long-term care home, also in Nanaimo.

Details on the new outbreaks are below.

Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria

Island Health has declared an outbreak on the 8 South East general medicine unit of Royal Jubilee Hospital following positive PCR tests in three patients.

The health authority says no other portions of the hospital are affected and stresses that it is still safe to seek care at RJH.

“The case numbers reported in this bulletin are cases that have been confirmed via PCR testing or follow up from Island Health’s case and contact management team,” the release notes.

It should be noted that this outbreak was announced in a press release issued by the provincial government on Friday as part of their COVID-19 update but had not been declared by Island Health until now.

Luther Court long-term care home (Saanich)

An outbreak has been declared at Luther Court long-term care home in Saanich.

Island Health says three staff members and two residents at the facility have tested positive for the coronavirus.

The health authority stresses that the outbreak declaration is limited to the 2 East unit of the home.

Luther Court, located on Cedar Hill Cross Road, is owned and operated by the Luther Court Society.

The Heights at Mt. View long-term care home (Saanich)

Island Health says an outbreak has been declared at The Heights and Mt. View in Saanich.

The health authority says one staff case and one resident case have been attributed to the outbreak, which is currently limited to the fourth floor.

The Heights and Mt. View, located at 3814 Carey Rd. near Uptown in Saanich, is owned and operated by Baptist Housing.

James Bay Care Centre (Victoria)

An outbreak has been declared by Island Health at James Bay Care Centre in Victoria.

Island Health says three resident cases have been attributed to this outbreak and that the outbreak declaration is limited to the fifth and sixth floors.

James Bay Care Centre, located on Simcoe Street, is owned and operated by Revera.

Selkirk Seniors Village Assisted Living (Victoria)

An outbreak has also been declared at Selkirk Seniors Village in Victoria after one resident tested positive.

The health authority says the outbreak declaration is limited to the sixth floor of the assisted living side of Selkirk Seniors Village and is not related to a separate outbreak that is occurring on the third floor of the long-term care side.

Selkirk Seniors Village, located at 385 Waterfront Cres., is owned and operated by West Coast Seniors Housing Management.
