WorkSafe B.C. is investigating after a truck driver was killed while delivering steel beams at Parksville’s operations yard on Herring Gull Way.

The City of Parksville says a subcontracted truck driver was killed while delivering a shipment of steel beams at its operations yard on Herring Gull Way Monday.

The city says WorkSafe B.C. is currently investigating the incident that happened during work of a new water treatment construction project on June 4. Oceanside RCMP was on the scene and contacted WorkSafe B.C. around 12:38 p.m. Monday.

Andy Watson, a spokesman for the BC Coroners Service, said Tuesday that the truck driver who died was a man in his 40s and was from Nanaimo.

Debbie Comis, chief administrative officer for the City of Parksville, told CHEK News, the man was moving steel beams, using a flatbed truck, from one area of the works yard where they were being stored to the actual work site, just metres away.

Parksville officials say they regret the tragic incident are extending condolences to the drivers’ family, friends and colleagues.

The city says there is no ongoing safety or environmental risk at the operations yard in the industrial park.
