Fire that damaged at portable classroom at Ecole Oceane was intentionally set

Nanaimo RCMP say a fire that damaged a portable classroom at Ecole Oceane on Saturday was intentionally set.

Fire crews were called to the school at 1951 Estevan Road on Saturday around 7 a.m.

They managed to contain the flames and minimize the damage.

RCMP say crews told them that the fire was caused by debris that had been placed next to the siding and set alight.

They also told police that they hadn’t seen any people or vehicles in the area as they were heading to the fire scene.

The area where the fire was set is sheltered from view by a retaining wall.

“It would take some time for the fire to ignite so we are asking the public to call us if they saw anyone one or any vehicles in or around the school from 6 am to 7:30 am,” said Constable Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

If you have any information, please call Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 or Crime Stoppers 1-800-222-8477.
