Central Saanich police says it is recommending impaired driving charges against the driver involved in a crash that killed a woman and seriously injured another while walking their dogs last summer.

Police say impaired driving causing death and impaired driving causing bodily harm are recommended against a 26-year-old man.

The crash happened around 7 p.m. Aug. 27, 2018, in the 7600-block of Central Saanich Road and killed 51-year-old Kim Ward, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say her sister, 48-year-old Tracy Ward, continues to recover from her injuries and authorities say the family is requesting privacy.

The women were out walking their dogs when they were struck, which also killed one of the dogs.

The other managed to run home.

The 2019 red Jeep Grand Cherokee involved in the fatal collision crossed over the oncoming traffic lane before striking the women.

Central Saanich Police said the same vehicle was also involved in a minor rear-end crash near Mountain Newton X Road and Lochside Drive about 20 minutes before the crash on Central Saanich Road.

Kim Ward was a massage therapist and member of Triathlon Canada’s Integrated Support team.

Ward served the team for both the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and the London Olympics in 2012.
