Impaired driving charges filed in Saanich hit and run that left UVic student in a coma

Charges have been filed in connection with a hit and run in Saanich in July that left a 20-year-old UVic student in a coma.

Saanich Police say charges including Impaired Driving Causing Bodily Harm and Dangerous Driving Causing Bodily Harm have been sworn against Drake Reynes.

“The investigation was led by the Detective Division with the assistance of the Patrol Section and the Traffic Safety Unit (Collision Analysts),” said D/Sgt. Damian Kowalewich.

“This was a significant crash that has caused serious injuries to the driver of the scooter.”

Aisha Strange was on her way to work on her moped when she was struck by a van just before 7 a.m. on July 15 at the corner of McKenzie Avenue and Shelbourne Street.

Police said at the time that the driver of the van abandoned his vehicle and attempted to flee on foot, but was arrested a short time later.

A statement from Aisha Strange’s family in August said she had suffered a traumatic brain injury and multiple broken bones.

She was transferred to a hospital in her hometown of Calgary last month.

Saanich Police say that Reynes will appear in court at a later date.
