Impaired driver caused crash that shut down part of Old Island Highway: Nanaimo RCMP

Mounties in Nanaimo were called to a collision that involved an impaired driver on the Old Island Highway Sunday night.It happened around 9 p.m. Sunday between Oliver and Mostar roads.

Witnesses say a driver in an older Sebring was tailgating a Honda Pilot in the fast lane heading southbound. The driver of the Sebring then passed in the slow lane and clipped the Pilot causing the Seabring to flip. It suffered extensive damage.

A 54-year-old man of no fixed address was driving the Sebring. He admitted to smoking cannabis before driving, according to RCMP. Police gave him a 24-hour driving suspension. Police also took a blood sample and say there will be further investigation.

The southbound lanes of the Old Island Highway were closed for close to an hour. Neither driver was seriously injured.
