The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) says an off-duty Victoria police officer was not part of the initial crash that claimed the life of a Quebec man early Sunday morning in Mill Bay.

The IIO says information provided by RCMP says the off-duty officer was neither the driver of a Corvette nor the rider of a motorcycle that collided around 2:15 a.m. Sunday and suggests the next vehicle to arrive was operated by the off-duty policeman.

The IIO says it is “focused on the actions” of the off-duty officer that came upon a debris field located in the roadway shortly after the collision.

The debris field caused several other vehicles to become involved.

Another unidentified vehicle is believed to have travelled past the incident shortly after.

The IIO is asking anyone with information that can help them locate that vehicle or the driver to call South Vancouver Island Traffic services at 250-416-0352.

The crash happened in the northbound lanes of the Trans-Canada Highway just south of the Cobble Hill Road and Cowichan Bay Road intersection.

Any witnesses to the incident are asked to call the IIO at 1-855-446-8477.

The IIO looks at all cases of police-involved deaths and serious injuries across B-C.
