IIO seeks witnesses to 2018 youth arrest in Comox

B.C.’s police watchdog is investigating an arrest involving a youth that occurred in Comox roughly six years ago.

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC says it’s looking for witnesses to the Jan. 3, 2018 arrest that occurred outside the Comox Valley Mall.

The Comox Valley RCMP told the IIO that just before 5 p.m. on that date, a girl was arrested in from of a liquor store at the Comox Valley Mall.

Mounties say they believed the youth would “be at risk if not apprehended” at the time.

In a release Thursday, the IIO says it was notified of the incident by police on Feb. 21, 2023. It came about a three months after the youth filed a civil claim on Nov 21, 2022, claiming that they were seriously inured during the arrest.

“Initial investigative steps have examined the level of injury the youth sustained and the details of the arrest and subsequent detention,” said the IIO on Thursday.
