The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) has been notified by RCMP after a man drowned early Thursday morning in Port Alberni.

Police were called around 3 a.m. from a Port Alberni business that an unclothed man, covered in blood, had just left the store and was at a nearby carwash to clean himself off.

When officers found the man, he fled on foot and entered a nearby river.

Mounties went into the water to reach the man but were unsuccessful.

IIO is investigating whether the actions or inactions of police are linked to the man’s injuries and no further information will be released by RCMP.
