With a category four storm continuing its path to the Hawaiin Islands, WestJet has cancelled regularly scheduled flights to and from Hawaii Thursday and Friday.

Although WestJet stopped taking inbound passengers to Hawaii for safety concerns to guests and crew due to Hurricane Lane, there were two unscheduled recovery flights from Honolulu and Maui Thursday morning.

The Canadian government has issued a travel advisory for Canadians to avoid all non-essential travel to Hawaii because of Hurricane Lane.

The cancelled flights are:

Aug. 23

  • WS1864 from Vancouver to Honolulu
  • WS1865 from Honolulu to Vancouver
  • WS1852 from Vancouver to Kahului
  • WS1853 from Kahului to Vancouver

Aug. 24

  • WS1864 from Vancouver to Honolulu
  • WS1865 from Honolulu to Vancouver
  • WS1852 from Vancouver to Kahului
  • WS1853 from Kahului to Vancouver

Hurricane Lane, which was a category five storm Tuesday night before weakening Wednesday, is expected to make landfall Thursday.

If Lane’s strength holds, it would be the most powerful hurricane to hit the island since “Iniki” in 1992, although meteorologist Chevy Chevalier says Lane may drop to a Category 3 by the afternoon.

WestJet says it is in the process of contacting customers who were to fly out from the two Islands and are rebooking for extra flight segments on the weekend when it is safe to resume service.

Passengers are being told to follow all emergency response instructions from local authorities.

WestJet said passengers travelling to or from cities affected by Hurrican Lane should check the status of their departures prior to leaving for the airport.
