The 9th annual Hungry Hearts Gala is returning to Victoria to help fundraise for nutritious meals for people in need.

This year, eight top chefs from Greater Victoria will be competing in the event, creating delicious meals to gala attendees.

The gala is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 9, at the Delta Hotels by Mariott Victoria Ocean Pointe Resort.

A silent auction is also open online, and will run until 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 9.

To date, the Hungry Hearts Gala has raised over $1 million for programs and services that help people struggling with poverty and homelessness in Greater Victoria.

CHEK News is sponsoring this year’s event, and the CHEK TV Hungry Hearts special broadcast will air at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 2.

The Hungry Hearts broadcast will showcase all eight chefs preparing their special dishes for the upcoming event.

Viewers will also be able to vote for which dish they would like to try most.

The eight chefs participating in this year’s gala are:

  • Chef Curtis Toth – Delta Victoria Ocean Pointe Resort
  • Chef Tyler Paquette – Fairmont Empress
  • Chef Castro Boateng – House of Boateng
  • Chef Gabe Fayerman-Hansen – Aurora Restaurant
  • Chef Huxley Freeman – The Oak Bay Beach Hotel
  • Chef Scott Doust – Sysco
  • Chef Brandyn Pearce – Virtuous Pie
  • Chef Peter Zambri – Zambris

Dishes on this year’s menu include Hokkaido sea scallops, braised pork belly and lamb terrine. The full menu can be found at the end of this story.

“It’s exciting to think that nine years ago, Hungry Hearts started out as a simple soup and sandwich competition amongst five local restaurants,” said Our Place CEO Julian Daly in a release on June 12.

“Now it has grown into the region’s favourite culinary gala fundraiser,” he said.

Funds from this year’s gala will go towards Our Place, which serves more than 1,200 meals to people in need every day.

“We need to find $175,000 this year alone just to purchase protein,” said Our Place kitchen manager Brian Cox.

Tickets for the gala can be purchased online for $175. Doors open at 5:45 p.m. on Sep. 9.
