Victoria residents are gearing up for Uber’s launch in the capital city by signing up as a driver.

On Monday, the ride-share company announced it would start making trips across the region next week.

“Just in time for a busy summer season, we are excited to be launching ride-share in Victoria and Kelowna next week,” said Keerthana Rang with Uber Canada.

The geographical area Uber will cover, as well as its launch date, is expected to be announced in the coming days.

According to Rang, the company is currently looking for drivers to fill out its fleet.

“We know that demand is going to be high given all the support we’ve received from residents, businesses and different stakeholders,” she added. “So we are encouraging people to sign up.”

Langford resident Logan Sanders signed up and told CHEK News he’s very excited to be one of the first Uber drivers in Victoria.

Sanders has driven for different food delivery apps for the past five years but wanted some more social interaction.

“I love driving my car, driving around the city, meeting people, and Uber has been a huge opportunity to have people in my car. The social aspect of it that food does not give you,” he said.

Sanders said driving for food delivery apps or ride-hailing services is a great side job because you get to choose when you want to work, adding it also helps him save up some extra cash for holidays.

“I have a 40-hour work week as well, so being able to do this when I want and where I want is a huge benefit,” he added.

There are requirements for both drivers and their cars to join the Uber fleet. Vehicles must have four doors and be nine years old or newer.

Sanders said drivers must have a class four license, have their vehicle inspected at least once a year and get a criminal record check done at a local police department.

“Basically everything that a regular cab driver or bus driver is required to have, you have to have it as well,” Sanders added.

Residents can sign up to become Uber drivers on the company’s website. Uber is also holding driver outreach events on Friday and Monday from 1-7 p.m. at the Delta Hotel on Harbour Road.
