One 20-year-old man is in custody is facing a charge of arson, after three fires were sparked in Courtenay Saturday.

RCMP say they were called to the 400-block of Anderton Avenue shortly after 10 a.m. following reports of a fire at the Cona Hostel.

The building was severely damaged and during the incident officers were called to another fire near 5th Street and Fitzgerald Avenue before attending a third on the 600-block of Cliffe Avenue.

Police say the man arrested is believed to be associated with one or more of the fires. He will appear in the courthouse in Courtenay Monday.

“There was likely a lot of witnesses in the area as these fires were occurring,” said Cst. Monika Terragni, Media Relations Officer, Comox Valley RCMP.

“If you witnessed any suspicious behaviour, we are asking you to call and speak with our investigators,”

No one was injured during the incident at the hostel.

International students working at Mt. Washington were staying at the business and have been given emergency lodging and funds while they look for a new home.

The owner of the Hostel says he will be assisting them in their search.
